Refractory Specialist – Mobile AL
Our client’s state-of-the-art steel processing facility has the capacity to process 5.3 million tons of high-value steel grades in the North America market. Now they are expanding their existing portfolio with the addition of a brand new, cutting edge Steelmaking facility. The addition of this facility creates a unique competitive advantage, providing team members with endless opportunities to use the latest technology, develop innovative solutions, and drive digitalization across everything they do.
Responsibilities: Oversee refractory usage and organization of refractory operations for steelmaking. Provide guidance and feedback to refractory operators.
Project Execution, Construction, and Startup Phase:
- Provide refractory expertise during basic & detail design of production equipment
- Design of refractory equipment; Participate in ladle design
- Create a refractory vendor database; Meet and evaluate vendors
- Write technical specification for refractory consumable and create SDS & MM number
- Write work instruction & HIRAC for refractory equipment usage
- Develop training documentation & course for refractory operators
- Set up refractory areas to include tools, devices and arrangements
Operations Phase:
- Fulfill the commitment to ensure a safe and healthy work environment
- Follow up and evaluate Electric Arc Furnace (EAF), Ladle Metallurgy Facility (LMF), Ladle, RH, and Caster refractory performances to include state and degradation time
- Identify appropriate counter measures in case of non-achievement of refractory performance targets
- Manage production equipment process parameters, identify deviations to standard that have influence on refractory performance, and implement corrective measures
- Organize and coordinate refractory repair and reline works for EAF, LMF, Ladle, RH, tundish
- Monitor refractory team and refractory contractor work progression
- Contribute to incident root cause analysis and corrective actions
- Take the ownership to seek and correct issues regarding refractory
- Write & update work instructions for refractory works and organize related HIRAC review (Harzard Identification, Risk Assessment, and Control)
- Lead or participate in continuous improvement activities
- Perform new material trials (brick and/or concrete)
- Work with EAF, LMF, RH, caster interfaces for the overall benefit of steel making mill
- Communicate and plan with the maintenance team the maintenance needs of refractory maintenance equipment and contractors
- Provide a refractory expertise to technology team for improvement projects implementation
- Demonstrates commitment to teamwork by fostering an environment that embodies trust and respect
- Monitor inventory levels of refractory and related consumables; Communicate with procurement and refractory vendors to ensure optimal refractory inventories are maintained
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Business, Management, or similar field; or equivalent experience
- 6+ years of refractory experience in a steel making factory required
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
Required:
- In depth knowledge of steelmaking refractory and concrete material
- Extensive knowledge of steelmaking refractory works and gunning operations
- Intermediate computer skills to include Microsoft Office and SAP
- Demonstrates strong decision-making, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Able to competently handle a fast-paced environment, with strong organizational, multi-tasking, and prioritizing skills
- Demonstrates strong interpersonal communications skills, written and verbal
- Demonstrates strong work ethic and displays a high degree of professionalism
- Interest and ability to work at our site location in Calvert, Alabama
Preferred:
- Technical knowledge of caster, melt shop, LMF, and/or RH desired

Compensation: Position is full time, permanent. Compensation will be commensurate with experience and includes benefits.
