Compliance Director – Insurance (Florida)
Outstanding career opportunity with a well established financial company based in Southeastern United States. This progressive and growing company is in search of a Compliance Director, to assume the role after the incumbent’s promotion.
The successful candidate will have 10+ years of insurance corporate compliance experience, living or willing to relocate to the Tampa / St Petersburg market, and a legal degree is highly preferred.
Role:
The Compliance Director is responsible for assessing, developing, managing, and maintaining an effective regulatory compliance program across all Company affiliates, with special focus on the Company’s insurance-related subsidiaries. This role must thoroughly understand both the regulatory and business environments in which each affiliate operates and be able to make effective recommendations and implement appropriate procedures balancing both of these factors. The Compliance Director must be able to effectively create a culture of compliance across the organization, implementing and auditing effective policies and procedures, ensuring that required filings are completed in a timely manner, coordinating applications for certificates of authority and other licensure, and training other associates on compliance-related matters.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee regulatory compliance function for all Company affiliates; identify, manage, and mitigate insurance and non-insurance compliance risks; assess, develop, implement, and maintain policies and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable laws, rules, and regulations and adherence to industry best practices; work with business units to develop innovative solutions that both achieve strategic business goals while ensuring compliance; communicate and ensure implementation of required procedural or policy changes necessitated by changes in laws or regulations; review marketing materials for compliance with applicable laws, rules, and regulations; retain and manage outside counsel as needed on regulatory matters; track, review, and respond as needed to inquiries from insurance regulators; coordinate financial and market conduct examinations; ensure that customer complaints are appropriately logged, tracked, and receive timely responses.
- Ensure that reports and filings are submitted accurately and in a timely manner, including financial statements, rate/form filings, holding company filings, surplus lines reports, officer/director change notifications, and all other required reports and filings.
- Manage and coordinate applications and renewals for certificates of authority and other licensing needs in accordance with business needs and expansion goals.
- Research and analyze applicable laws and regulations to help provide guidance to business units on product-related and operational compliance matters.
- Oversee OFAC and AML compliance, ensuring implementation of best practices appropriate to varying risk profiles of different functions and business units.
- Develop and provide accurate and timely management and board-level reporting, as requested, on insurance compliance, customer complaint tracking, and other related matters.
- Work with Internal Audit and Legal teams to coordinate both internal and external compliance audits as needed.
- Ensure a company-wide “culture of compliance”; develop and deliver compliance related training across the organization.
- Complete additional tasks or projects as directed by the General Counsel or requested by internal clients.
Requirements:
- 10–15 years prior experience in the insurance regulatory practice of a law firm, in a senior compliance role at an insurance carrier, or as a senior regulator at a state department of insurance.
- Bachelor’s degree in business, insurance, risk management, or similar field.
- Strong knowledge of property and casualty insurance regulations across both commercial and personal lines in all fifty U.S. states plus the District of Columbia.
- Robust knowledge of insurance regulations and required reporting applicable to insurance carriers, holding companies, managing general agencies, and third party administrators.
- Knowledge of OFAC and AML regulations and best practices.
- Experience coordinating financial and market conduct examinations.
- Experience using and administering regulatory change tracking software.
- Experience with frequently used legal and regulatory research tools (Lexis, Westlaw, NILS Insource, etc.).
- Prior experience supervising a compliance team.
Preferred Education and Experience
- Prior experience as a state insurance regulator strongly preferred.
- Juris Doctor and Florida bar admission or eligibility for Authorized House Counsel status preferred.
- CPCU, ARC, AIRC, and/or ACP/CCP certifications preferred.
- Additional experience in the insurance tracking/lender-placed insurance, professional employer organization (PEO), or service contract industries a plus.
- Familiarity with RegEd’s Comply On Demand Enterprise (CODE) insurance compliance platform strongly preferred.
Location: This position is based in the Greater Tampa / St Petersburg area (no remote opportunities)
